Seed Savers Exchange strives to save North America's diverse, but endangered, garden heritage for future generations by building a network of people committed to collecting, conserving and sharing heirloom seeds and plants, while educating people about the value of genetic and cultural diversity.

We developed a strategic communications plan to expand visibility of Seed Savers Exchange, highlight its vital role in the movement of seed preservation, promote growing relationship with members and donors, and build long-term public engagement of biodiversity, conservation and sustainable living.

We then worked to implement that plan by developing a successful online membership campaign, providing guidance on online engagement strategies, developing metrics to evaluate social media efforts, and concurrently targeting traditional and new media outlets in gardening, lifestyle, health, food, environment and green living.

Seed Savers Exchange was recently highlighted in National Geographic Magazine and DG&Co.'s strategic media outreach, coupled with detailed press material, and trained spokespersons from SSE, extended the top-level coverage to other national outlets such as, the Baltimore Sun, Chicago Tribune, and Cleveland Plain Dealer. We pitched practical stories about planning your garden, how to seed save, and pros and cons of heirloom seeds--all highlighting SSE and the heirloom varieties they preserve. Each story placed raised consciousness about how heirloom seeds play a critical role in the healthy food supply, cultural legacy and genetic diversity of the earth.
